The following competitions will take place over Zoom:

  • Piano Solo (piano or keyboard will be allowed, keyboard has to be in standard piano setting).

  • Guitar Solo

  • Open-String Solo

  • Open-Instrumental Solo

The zoom competitions will take place during the week of May 11-14. As the week approaches, we will list specific competition times. The competitors will be placed into groups of up to 20 at a time into a digital Zoom room. Coaches will also be given a password to enter the digital Zoom room.

The judge and league staff will also be in attendance. Participants will perform from their home one performer at a time.

Participants will need access to an electronic device that can use Zoom and have working speakers, microphone, and a video camera. They will also need the instrument if applicable.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL OTHER Arts Festival competitions NOT LISTED ABOVE have been canceled. See TCSAAL 4/17 COVID statement.

Zoom Best Practices

After registering for the Virtual Competitions, what should you do next?

Make sure you and your students have a good working Zoom set up.

Register for a free Zoom Account here (each performer will need a free account). https://zoom.us/signup

Conduct practices with your performers over Zoom to make sure your students are prepared to compete over Zoom.

Setting up your Zoom Name:

  • Before the competition, log into your Zoom account.
  • Click on my account in the upper right corner
  • Under profile page click edit on name
  • Edit your name in the following format
  • In first name, put your first name
  • In last name, put your last name, then have a space, then put your school name, then have a space and put your competition age (i.e. MS or HS).

It should look like this:

After doing this your display will look like this:

Setting up your Zoom name properly is important to help us identify you in the competition.

Coaches Please also set up your Zoom Name similarly with: (First Name) (Last Name, Teacher, School)

ZOOM Best Practices:

Lighting advice It is best to light from the both sides or from in front. You do not want to light from behind or be sitting in front of a window.

Audio Advice For best audio, performers should “enable original sound” in the Zoom audio settings. This will allow your voice and your instrument to be picked up at the highest level.

Setting up your performance area

Coaches should practice with their students ahead of time making sure that the students have a working set-up with good audio and video.

External microphones and webcams are allowed but not required. The judges will take varying audio quality into account and not penalize for it.

Performance Guidelines:

Competitors should stay in the Zoom room during the performances of their entire grouping. When the performer is called on to perform, they will be unmuted by admin. They will do a quick audio check-in before their time begins. They will be instructed when their time begins. League staff will notify when one minute remains and when time is up. When time is up, the performer will be muted.

Performers should set up their performance space so the camera can watch the performer perform. Most instruments should be a straight-on shot. In the case of piano, they should set the camera up so the camera can see a side shot of the performer so the judge can see the performer and their hand playing the keys.

Piano shot:

Other Instruments shot:

Monologue Interpretation should be zoomed out enough to show the entire performance area.

If during a performance a performer has an internet failure, they may be allowed to perform again at the end of the round at the judge's discretion.
